2

why study twins

A

identical twins share the same genes. if one is criminal the other ought to be too

Q

TWINS
what does christiansens theory show
(concordance rate)

A

52% concordance rate between MZ twins

if one identical twin has a conviction, 52% chance of the other getting one

with DZ twins there is only 22% chance

Q

what is the benefit of studying adopted children over twins living with their biological parents

A

the adopted child shares the same environment as their adoptive parents.

if more similar to birth parents behaviour then it would support genetic explanation

Q

ADOPTION
summarise mednicks study

A

examined data on 14,000 adopted sons

found that sons were more likely to have a criminal record if a birth parent also had a record

they found 14.7% had a criminal record if their adoptive parents had one

adopted children with criminal records are more likely to have biological parents with records

Q

why is it important to know whether or not the adoption took place soon after birth

A

if adopted soon after birth they are more likely to share the environment of their adoptive parents

if adopted later on they have still been exposed to biological parents environment
