- known as a ‘inner devil’
- impulsive thoughts that are selfish that develop when we are babies
- it’s designed to pleasure ourselves and will get it in any way possible

- described as the reality principle
- tries to be practical and realistic
- acting as a mediator between ID and the superego

- described as moral conscience
- we learn this through interaction with our parents
- tells you what is moral

- leads to constant worry and further anxiety and guilt
