What is social control?

A

Any strategy which prevents deviant human behavior. Everyone is encouraged to confirm to the law and actions that achieve social control.

What are internal forms of social control?

A

Things that come from within in- so our personalities and our values. They are our self-control, which leads us to conform to rules of society and group we belong too.

What is our rational ideology?

A

Your conscience, your moral compass- feelings of guilt, anxiety, or worry from within, which steer you away from an ‘incorrect’ course of action towards one that fits with laws and rules.

How does rational ideology link to Freud?

A

The superego- it is our rational ideology. The superego develops in childhood due to socialisation and learning right from wrong. The superego is less selfish than the id and ego, so it helps to rationalise our thoughts.

How does our culture socialize us? Give an example

A

We accept its norms, values, and traditions as part of our identity. For example, fasting during Ramadan, midnight masses.

A

Our conscious and the traditions we follow start as outside of use, there must be a process where we internalize these ideas and they become our own.

A

That we learn from models in our life, if you grow up with people who follow the rules, you are more likely to follow the rules and respect the law. We internalize other peoples actions and positive and negative consequences.

A

A

To what extent do we believe obeying the law is the right thing to do? How strong is our personal moral code?
