The police

A

-Work with the courts to ensure that defendants are brought before them.
-Often give evidence in court.
-Work with the probation services and the management of a defender.
-Work closely with the CPS in the charging and prosecuting of offenders.
-The police may be called upon to assist if a person on probation reoffends. The police will arrest an offender released from prison who breaches the terms of his or her release and is recalled.

A

Crown prosecution service - CPS

A

-Close links with the police and advice the police on the charging standards.
-Use of evidential test and the public interest to determine whether or not to prosecute.
-Appear in court and conduct the advocacy of the case.
-In both Crown Court and magistrates’ court, there will be advocates who prosecute the case on behalf of the Crown.
-The Crown Prosecution Service has a statutory obligation to ensure that the prosecution advocate is introduced to you at court and answers your questions.

HM Prison Service

A

-Lawyers may seek to visit prisoners before hearings.
-The judges from courts set the terms for imprisonment and if the sentence is concurrent or conclusive.
-If police deny bail or courts deny bail, they will go to prison.
-They will work with the probation services when a prisoner is released.

National Probation Service

A

-Police will arrest a prisoner on probation and return them to prison.
-Liaison with the police if there are issues and recall to prison if needed.
-Overseeing all prisoners who have served a sentence of up to two years.
-Courts will inform NPS of offenders who have been placed on probation.
