What is the green paper?

A

A draft of a law which is put forward, if there is interest in the bill it will progress.

What is the white paper???

A

Sets out any intended aims of legislation, if agreed it will be drafted as a bill and presented in the commons.

What is the first reading??

A

Formal introduction to a bill, the main aims are read out and a verbal vote is taken to see if a second reading is needed.

A

Main debate on a bill, which is followed by a vote (it must have majority support to progress)

What is the committee stage??

A

Examination of the bill itself, 16-50 MPs review and amend. These MP’s are experts in the area the bill concerns

A

Final debate, decides if the bill should progress to the House of Lords.

What happens during the house of lords??

A

A bill is reviewed and amended, ping pong where amendments are made back and forth between the houses until an agreement is reached.

What is royal assent??

A

The monarch must sign the bill before it is passed into law.

What is original precedent??

A

New point of law that has never been decided in previous cases, the judges decision in the case will be the new precedent in future cases

What is binding precedent?

A

Precedent set out in earlier cases that must be followed even if the judge preceding over the case disagrees.

A
