What are Norms
Specific social standards that define how people should behave in society
What are Values
Overall guidelines on how people should live, outlines what’s good/bad or right/wrong
What are Moral Codes
A term used to describe a set of basic rules values and principles held by an individual, group of people or society
What are Mores
These are essential/vital social norms that need to be in society
How was drink driving seen during the early 1900s?
Societies didn’t disapprove of drink driving as it was seen as a social norm

Did drink driving attitudes shift after 1925’s law
No
It was still normalized within society and due to the lack of frequency of cars and therefore deaths - it didn’t violent societal mores (preserving life)
Also there was an ambiguity to the law as no one clearly outlined what defined ‘drunk’ or blood alcohol level

Yes - it began to violate basic mores (as there was now a loss in human life) therefore it became less tolerable within social norms and met with disapproval and began to be seen as a clear negative deviant act

The Government introduced the 1967 Road Safety Act and outlined a clear blood alcohol level (80mg)
Then in 1968 roadside breathalyzers were introduced

Anti drink driving campaigns from THINK!
The campaign/adverts targeted likely drink driving offenders (young men) and aimed of altering their personal values/moral codes
By 2014 after heavy campaign 91% of people agreed that drink driving was unacceptable - conflicting with the 1979 stats where 50% of male drivers admitted to drink driving
This showed the campaigns positive effects
