labelling theory stating deviance is a label placed on an act decoded by the reaction to the certain act
what can make labels vary?
time and place
who commits the act and who feels harmed by it
what can labelling produce?
a self fulfilling prophecy where the person who is labelled may come to fit the image people have of them
what did albert cohen believe about crime?
working classes experience status frustration because they can’t reach their goals set by society. they then form their own subculture where they have shared values different from mainstream society and committing crime gains status in the subculture
what did lemert believe about primary and secondary deviance?
primary- deviant acts that has no social consequences/ no labels on them
secondary- result of labels that are put on someone for repeated deviance, this label then changes behaviour - more crime
