hear pleas of guilty or not guilty
decide punishments
grants bail if needed

magistrate’s court - less serious offences (95%)
crown court - serious offences triable by judge and jury
what does the hm prison service do
supervise offenders in custody
what does national probation service do
supervise offenders serving sentences in community and prisoners released on license
