What happens in the First Reading?
The bill and its aims are read out and a formal vote takes place
What happens in the Second Reading?
A main debate and another vote
What happens in the Committee Stage?
A group of representatives look at the bill and address the issues and amendments
What happens at the Report Stage?
The committee report back to a full house and vote on the amendments
What happens at the Third Reading?
The final vote
What is the Royal Assent?
The monarch signs the bill and they cannot refuse
Finally - a commencement date is set and it becomes an act of parliament
What is Judicial Precedent?
A law is made by a judge in court when a case is before them. They make a judgement and form a new law. This must be followed in similar cases
What is Statutory Interpretation?
A judge in a higher court (supreme or appeal) is called to interpret words in a statute. They interpret how they see fit
