CHARACTER OF ABUSER
- Has been abused
- Low self-esteem / need for power
- Alcoholic / drug dependent
- Parent of unwanted pregnancy
- Parent with minimal parenting skills and knowledge
- Lack of education and poverty
- Immature and needy
CHARACTER OF ABUSED
- Accept responsibility for others
- Helpless
- Submissive
- Frightened
- Suicidal
Violent or nonviolent sexual contract or activity that is unwanted by the receiver
SEXUAL ABUSE
o Sexual intercourse between persons related that maariage is illegal
INCEST
o Forcing, degrading, non-consensual, violent, and intimidating
RAPE
Usually occurs on a job by someone in authority
Sexual Harassment
MANIFESTATIONS OF SEXUAL ABUSE
- Pain, itching, bruises, and bleeding of genitals
- Difficulty of walking or sitting
- Changes in the performance in school
- Reports sexual assaults
- Stains on underwear
- Withdrawn, shame, guilt
- Pregnancy
- VD – venereal disease
- Sleep disturbances
- Loss of appetite
- Fear, anxiety, phobias, suspicion
- Decrease in activity
NURSING INTERVENTION for sexually abused patients
- Safe environment, check ideas of self-harm
- Show empathy
- Non-judgmental
- Provide calm environment
- Assist with contacting outside agencies
- Using of rape kit and preserve evidences
Any action that causes physical harm to another person
PHYSICAL ABUSE
Rule of thumb – “stop you are hurting me”
Physical Abuse
MANIFESTATIONS of physical abuse
- Bruises with varying stages of healing
- Lacerations and bald patches on the scalp
- Burns from cigar
- Fractures, sprains, dislocations, falls
- Unusual fear/desire to please a person
- Incongruent in explaining an injury
NURSING INTERVENTIONS of physical Abuse
- Safe environment
- Supportive therapy = crisis counseling to decrease anxiety
and supportive care - Emergency medical care
- Exploring continuity of care so to regain control of their
own life
o Willful use of words or action that attempt to undermine the other person’s self-esteem, “Silent treatment”
