About ceramics Flashcards
what are ceramics?
ceramics are range of hard, long-lasting,non-metallic, which are generally unaffected by heat.
how are ceramics formed
ceramics are often formed by heating then cooling
give examples of ceramics
traditional bricks, china, glass as well as materials used to make artificial bones.
what are the physical properties of ceramics
hard, stiff, high melting point, heat resistant, good insulators of heat and electricity, very unreactive.
what are insulators
a material that does not allow something to pass through it like heat or electricity.
what are conductors
a substance that allows something to pass through it like heat or electricity.
what does the size of the crystal depend on
it depends on the speed of cooling. slower cooling produces larger crystals because the atoms have more time to form a grid-like lattice structure.
what is the reason why ceramics are stiff
because there are so many atoms bonded to each other
