abnormality lesson 1-4 Flashcards
what does deviation from social norms mean?
- it is behaving in a way that deviates from the social rules, behaving in this way would be deemed abnormal and thus unacceptable.
- Social norms are varied from one culture to another (wearing clothes may be unacceptable in some cultures but not in others)
who can the deviation from social norms theory will in everyday life?
It can be used to identify a person who has a mental disorder.
if a person is behaving in a strange way that deviates from what is expected from them, then we can be concerned enough to see that the indivdual is suffering from a mental disorder
2 disadvantages of deviation of social norms as a definition of abnormality
- The definition does not always clearly indicate that a person has a psychological abnormality. Therefore psychologists must be cautious when making judgements about whether deviation from social norms implies that someone is abnormal or just odd/eccentric
- A disadvantage of using deviation from social norms as a definition of abnormality is that context must be taken into account. An example could be that wearing no clothes in the high street would be viewed as odd and deviating from social norms
one advantage of deviation of social norms as a definition of abnormality
-A strength of deviation from social norms is that it distinguishes a difference between desirable and non desirable behaviour. The model aims to protect the public from the effects of abnormal behaviour and the damaging consequences it can have.
what does failure to function adequately mean?
-the person is unable to cope with day to day life such as having a job or interacting with others because they are experiencing oyschological distress. This will impact their, personal and social life
AO1 seligman et al
The failure to function model encompasses 7 criterias that help define abnormality . The higher the number of criteria, the more abnormal the person is, the lower the number of criteria, the more normal the person is. (Sumoviv)
what does sumoviv stand for
S- SUFFERING U-UNPREDICATBILITY /LOSS OF CONTROL M-MALADAPTIVENESS O-OBSERVER DISCOMFORT V-VIVDNESS I- IRRATIONALITY V-VIOLATION OF MORAL STANDARDS
ONE advantage of failure to function adequately as a definition of abnormality
by using the GAF scale means that psychologists can accurately assess the degree of abnormality and how well the patient is coping with their daily life.
If the patient appears not to be coping very well then it can be concluded that they are abnormal and the correct treatment can be given.
2 disadvantage of failure to function adequately as a definition of abnormality
- By doing this quiz it can label patients as ‘strange’ and crazy which can lead to discrimination even if it has little impact on anyone. Which can further lead to more health problems.
- abnormality is not always accompanied by dysfunction, some people do have a psychological abnormality but does not appear to possess any of the 7 criteria and is seen to lead a normal life. for example some people may appear not to be functioning adequately at all, but they might actually be quite normal and just having a bad day. thus failure to function adequately may be an inaccurate definition of abnormakity
