what is involved in IOL?
instigate labour artificially using medications or devices to ripen the cervix followed by artificial rupture of the membranes
what is used to clinically assess the cervix?
Bishop’s Score
how does Bishop’s score work?
the higher the score the more progressive change in the cervix
what can be used to ripen the cervix? (2)
vaginal prostaglandin pessaries

what bishop score is favourable for amniotomy?

what do you want to achieve with IV oxytocin?
4-5 contractions in 10 minutes
what is used to evaluate progress in labour?
cervical effacement
cervical dilation
descent of the fetal head
what is Cephalopelvic disproportion?
fetal head is in the correct position but too large to negotiate the maternal pelvis
how is fetal well-being monitored? (4)
auscultation of the fetal heart
cardiotocography
fetal blood sampling
fetal ECG
what is primary PPH?
more than 500ml blood loss within 24h delivery
what is secondary PPH?
more than 500ml blood loss from 24h to 6w
how long is Lochia normal for?
3-4 weeks
