abnormal gait patterns Flashcards
ataxic
staggering,unsteadiness, wide bos, exaggerated movements
“mechanical bull”
cerebellar gait similar
antalgic
protective gait pattern, involved step length is decreased in order to avoid weight bearing to the involved side.
ankle sprain, knee surgery
circumduction
circular motion to advance leg during swing phase. compensation for hip or knee flex insuffeciency
leg length discrepancy
double step
equine
alternate steps are of different length or at a diff rate
high steps, excessive gastroc activity
festinating
parkinsonian
walks on toes as though being pushed. starts slowly then increases until grasps for object to stop.
shuffling gait, quick and sm steps
hemiplegic
abducts paralyzed limb, swinging around to front of them
scissor
leg crosses midline upon advancement
spastic
stiff movement, toes catch and drag, legs held together, hips and knees somewhat flexed.
cp
steppage
feet and toes lifted through hip and knee flex to excessive heights. may be secondary to dorsiflexor weakness. foot slap at initial contact.
excessive knee flex to clear drop foot toes in swing phase
tabetic
high stepping ataxic gait pattern, feet slap ground
trendelenburg
glut med weakness, excessive lat trunk flex, weight shifting over the stance leg.
weak side is “hip hiked”
“the side that pops out”
vaulting
swimg leg advances by compensating through the combination of elev of pelvis and plantar flex of stance leg.
LLDs and amputees
happens when leg or prosthesis is too long
