Abnormal Gait Pattern Flashcards
Decrease weight bearing
Normal ipsilateral step length
Short contralateral step length
Antalgic
Staggering with wide base of support
Cerebellar issues
Hard time to place foot
Ataxic Gait
Toe walking
Spastic or shortened triceps surae
Club foot
Equinus Gait
Backward lurch/lean at initial contact phase
Moved center of gravity posterior, which creates an extension moment
Gluteus Max Gait
Contralateral hip drops during stance
If bilateral, wobbling pelvis
If compensated, lateral trunk lean
Gluteus Medius Gait (Trendelenburg Gait)
Circumducted gait Possible spastic plantarflexion Dorsiflexion weakness Often requires an AFO Often happens after a stroke
Hemiplegic Gait
Festinating gait pattern Short rapid steps Difficulty initiating movement Once movement initiated, able to carry out the task High fall risk
Parkinsonian Gait
Forward lurching during initial contact
Attempts to extend/hyperextend knee
Shift center of gravity ahead of axis of rotation
Knee or back surgery
Weak Quad Gait
Spastic adductors
Seen in cerebral palsy
Scissor Gait
Increased knee and hip flexion
Can’t get good dorsiflexion, so limit time on stance phase
Steppage Gait
Femoral anteversion
Increased Toe-In Gait
Femoral retroversion
Increased Toe-Out Gait
