Abnormal Development Flashcards
describe what developmental delay is defined as
failure to attain appropriate developmental milestones for child’s corrected chronological age
who is key in first recognising possible developmental delay
parents, carers, nursery teachers, health visitor etc.
when are the key assessments of development by the health visitor
6 months, 14 months, 27 months, 4-5 years (before school)
what are the different patterns of abnormal development
delay, deviation, regression
what are the 2 different types of developmental delay
global(eg Down’s) or specific(eg Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy)
give an example of a deviation and a regression abnormal development
deviation = autism regression = Rett's syndrome
what IQ is defined as a learning difficulty
below 70, depending on how low can be more severe
what are some red flags for development at any age
loss of skills, concerns re vision or hearing, asymmetry of movement(increased/decreased tone)
what is a red flag for development at 6 months and at 12 months
6 months = not reaching for objects
12 months = not able to reach unsupported
what are some red flags for development at the age of 18 months
unable to walk by 18 months, no speech by 18 months
what is global developmental delay defined as
significant delay(2SD) n 2+ of; gross/fine motor, speech/language, cognition, social/personal or ADL
what are some prenatal causes of global developmental delay(GDD)
genetic, metabolic, CNS malformation, infection, toxins
what are some perinatal causes of GDD
prematurity, asphyxia
what are some postnatal causes of GDD
infection, trauma, environmental
what are the different types of specific developmental delay(SDD)
motor delays, language delays, sensory deficits + associated delay, developmental deviations
(often overlap in different syndromes)
