Q

6 steps to interpret an ABG report?

A
  1. is the pH acidotic/alkalotic
  2. is the PaCO2 acidotic/alkalotic?
  3. is the HCO3 acidotic/alkalotic?
  4. is the respiratory or metabolic the primary system?
  5. is there compensation?
  6. is there hypoxemia?

Q

Complete vs incomplete compensation?

A

complete means the opposite system will be outside of its normal range but the pH will be within normal range

incomplete means the opposite system will be outside of its normal range but the pH will still be outside of its normal range
