ABG's Flashcards
Normal pH values? What does low or high values indicate?
7.35-7.45
high= alkalosis
low=acidosis
*same as HCO3
Normal PaCO2 values? What does low or high values indicate?
35-45mmHg
high=acidosis
low=alkalosis
*opposite to pH and HCO3
Normal O2 values? What indicates hypoxemia?
80-100mmHg
<80=hypoxemia
<60=severe hypoxemia
Normal HCO3 values? What does low or high values indicate?
22-28meq/l
high=alkalosis
low=acidosis
*same as pH
6 steps to interpret an ABG report?
- is the pH acidotic/alkalotic
- is the PaCO2 acidotic/alkalotic?
- is the HCO3 acidotic/alkalotic?
- is the respiratory or metabolic the primary system?
- is there compensation?
- is there hypoxemia?
Complete vs incomplete compensation?
complete means the opposite system will be outside of its normal range but the pH will be within normal range
incomplete means the opposite system will be outside of its normal range but the pH will still be outside of its normal range
