What does ABG measures?
The dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide in the arterial blood
PH normal value
PH 7.35 - 7.45
CO2 normal value
35 - 45

22 - 26

What is the first thing a nurse needs to do before ABG blood draw?
. Perform Allen’s test
When should the ABG test NOT be performed?
. Do not draw blood if patient has been suctioned or there have been changes in oxygen.
What should the patient do before ABG test?
. Have patient rest for 20 - 30 minutes
Can Oxygen be turn off before ABG test?
Do not turn oxygen off unless order requires ABG on room air
What is the first thing the nurse need to do after ABG test?
Put sample on ice
What should be documented on lab form?
Put patient’s temperature, oxygen and type of ventilation on lab form
What is the safety precaution for patients on blood thinners?
Apply pressure to puncture site for 5-10 min if patient is on blood thinners
When should the specimen be taken to the lab?
Take specimen to lab with in 15 min
