Q

Contraindications for ABG

A

Arterial-venous (AV) fistula in the upper limb

Previous surgery involving the axilla eg previous axillary clearance during breast surgery

Peripheral vascular disease

Local infection at site

Broken skin at proposed site

Q
A
  1. Fist
  2. Use fingertips, press against the wrist to occlude the blood flow to the radial and ulnar arteries.
  3. Release fist and observe the blanched appearance to the hand, while maintaining pressure on both arteries.
  4. Remove pressure from the ulnar artery whilst maintaining pressure on the radial artery, observe the patient’s hand flush with colour. This should occur within 5 to 8 seconds.
  5. Repeat the process with the radial artery.
