ABG Flashcards
pH
Potential hydrogen
Human body pH - 7.35 to 7.45
Acidosis
Below normal pH
Alkalosis
Above normal pH
PCO2
Measure of pressure exerted by dissolved CO2 in the blood plasma and is proportional to the PCO2 in the alveoli
Indicates how well air is being exchanged between the blood and the lungs
Hypoventilation
Abnormal increase in PCO2
Hyperventilation
Abnormal decrease in PCO2
PO2
Measure of the pressure exerted by dissolved O2 in the blood plasma and indicates the ability of the lungs to diffuse O2 through the alveoli into the blood
Used to evaluate the effectiveness of oxygen therapg
SO2
Measure of the percentage of hemoglobin binding sites occupied by oxygen to the bloodstream
Patients oxygen saturation - 98 percent is normal
Hypoxemia
Below 90 percent oxygen saturation
Low level of oxygen in blood
May be cyanotic
