Abdominal wall Flashcards
Name the 3 cavities that the body can be divided into
Thoracic, abdominal, pelvic.
What are the boundaries of the abdominal cavity?
Cranial - diaphragm
Dorsal - lumbar vertebrae
Lateral/ventral - muscular abdominal wall
Caudal - pelvic inlet
List the body wall components in order from external to internal
Skin Cutaneous trunci muscle Superficial fascia External abdominal oblique Internal abdominal oblique Transverse abdominus Peritoneum
In which direction do the fibres of the external abdominal oblique muscle run?
Caudoventral.
Where does the external abdominal oblique muscle insert?
Linea alba via aponeurosis which passes over rectus abdominus.
In which direction do the fibres of the internal abdominal oblique muscle run?
Cranioventral.
What are the origin and insertion points of the internal abdominal oblique muscle?
Origin - vertebral column
Insertion - linea alba and caudal ribs
In which direction do the fibres of the transverse abdominus muslce run?
Ventral.
What is the origin and point of insertion of the transverse abdominus muscle?
Origin - transverse process of lumbar vertebrae
Insertion - linea alba
Which portions of the abdominal wall is the transverse abdominus muscle present in?
Cranial and mid portions.
Where does the rectus abdominus muscle run?
Either side of the linea alba in a cranio-caudal direction
What is the origin and point of insertion of the rectus abdominus muscle?
Origin - sternum
Insertion - pubic bone
In which direction do the fibres of the rectus abdominus muscle run?
Caudal
State 6 functions of the abdominal wall
- Support
- Protection
- Abdominal press
- Flexion
- Lateral movement
- Respiration
