Abdominal vasculature Flashcards
Name the three unpaired branches of the abdominal aorta and the vertebral level at which they arise
Coeliac trunk - T12
Superior mesenteric artery - L1
Inferior mesenteric artery - L3
Name the paired branches of the abdominal aorta
Renal arteries
Ovarian/testicular arteries
How many pairs of lumbar arteries are there? What do they supply?
Four
They arise from the back of the aorta pass behind psoas major, then branch to supply the back, the spine and the abdominal wall.
Name the branches of the coeliac trunk
Common hepatic artery
Splenic artery
Left gastric artery
(diaphragmatic arteries)
What does the inferior mesenteric artery supply?
The distal part of the large intestine
What is the name of the main artery to the lower extremity?
External iliac artery
When does the external iliac artery become the femoral artery? Which branches does it give off?
When it passes underneath the inguinal ligament.
Gives off the deep circumflex iliac artery and the inferior epigastric artery
At what vertebral level do the renal veins join the inferior vena cava?
L2
The blood from the liver returns to systemic circulation via which veins? How many of these veins are there?
Hepatic veins
Varies but is usually around 3
What is the origin of the superior epigastric artery?
Internal thoracic artery
Which arteries make up the inner arcade of the stomach?
Right gastric artery and left gastric artery
Which arteries make up the outer arcade of the stomach?
Right gastro-epiploic artery (terminal branch of the gastroduodenal artery, arising from the common hepatic artery)
Left gastro-epiploic artery (a branch of the splenic artery)
Which arteries arise from the common hepatic artery?
hepatic artery
gastro-duodenal artery
right gastric artery
Which arteries arise from the gastro-duodenal artery?
gastro-epiploic artery
pancreatico-duodenal artery
Which artery supplies the foregut?
Coeliac trunk
