In what order does inspection go?
Abdomen for surface characteristics. Abdominal contour for symmetry. Abdominal movement. -movement with respiration -peristalsis -aortic pulsation
What order does auscultation go?
Bowel sounds
Friction rubs
Bruits
Venous hum
What order does percussion go in?
Percuss all abdominal quadrants.
Percuss to estimate liver span.
Percuss the spleen, gastric bubble, kidneys.
What order does the palpating portion go?
Light palpation in all four quadrants. Deep palpation in all four quadrants. Umbilical Ring Liver Gallbladder Spleen Kidneys Aorta Bladder
What order do you test the special tests in?
Rebound tenderness Cullen and grey turners sign Kehr sign Markle sign Murphy sign Rovsing sign Iliopsoas and obturator muscle test Ballotement
What order does the anus inspection go in?
Inspect Sacrococcygeal area
Inspect Anus
Examine anal sphincter for tone and palpate anal ring
Examine the rectum by palpating rectal walls
Examine prostate
Examine fecal material
What is rebound tenderness?
Pain upon removal of pressure.
What is Cullen and grey turners sign?
Ecchymosis of the flanks and umbilical area indicating retroperitoneal hemorrhage.
What is kehr sign.
Referred pain to the left shoulder indicative of a ruptured spleen.
What is markle sign?
Heel jar used to test for appendicitis.
What is Murphy sign?
Taking a deep breath and palpating to the right upper quadrant. If pain is present it indicates cholecystitis.
What is rovsing sign?
Indirect tenderness associated with inflammation.
What is the iliopsoas test?
Iliopsoas and obturator used to test for appendicitis through the elicitation pain.
What is ballotement?
Checking for appropriate movement of internal organs in free floating space.
