Abdomen specific components and drainage Flashcards
What are lacteals?
Specialized lymphatic capillaries in the villi in the small intestine that absorb dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins as well as large proteins, molecules that are too large to be absorbed by the capillaries of the cardiovascular system.
What is Chyle (G. milk)?
The lymphatic fluid containing the products of digestion absorbed by lacteals in the small intestine. It is opaque and whitish in appearance.
What is the cistern chyli?
beginning of the thoracic duct
How is the cisternae chyli formed?
left lumbar trunk
right lumbar trunk
intestinal trunk
What does the intestinal trunk drain?
lymphatic fluid from organs within the peritoneal cavity to the cisterna chyli. Its drainage pattern follows the arteries, but flows in the opposite direction.
What does the right and left lumbar trunks transport?
transport lymph from the lower limbs, pelvis, primary retroperitoneal organs, and body wall to the cisterna chyli.
Where is the cistern chyli?
anterior to to L1 and L2
