Abdomen - Peritoneum and Peritoneal Cavity Flashcards
What is the peritoneum?
the peritoneum lines the abdominal cavity
it consitss of an epithelial-like single layer of cells together with a supportive layer of connective tissue
It holds the organs in place while secreting a lubricating fluid to reduce the friction between organs.
Parietal peritoneum
lines the abdominal wall
Visceral peritoneum
covers the suspended organs
What is a mesentary?
mesentaries are thin sheets of tissue suspending the organs from the posterior abdomen wall
what is the peritoneal cavity?
a chamber enclosed by the abdominal wall
Introperitoneal structures
are suspended from the abdominal wall by mesenteries
- GI tract
- Stomach
- Liver
- Spleen
- Jejunum, Ileum
- Appendix
- Transverse colon
- Sigmoid colon
- Tail of pancreas
- First part of duodenum
Retroperitoneal structures
Not suspended from the abdominal wall & lie between partietal peritoneum and abdominal wall.
- Aorta
- Kidneys
- Adrenal glad
_ Pancreas
_ Ureters
- Ascending and descending colon
Secondary retroperitoneal organs
once suspended by mesenteries but migrated posteriorly to peritoneum during embryogeneis
- 2nd to 4th duodenum
- pancreas
- ascending and descending colon
- large intestine and duodinum
- kidneys
- adrenal gland
- ureters
Peritonitis
inflammation of the peritoneum
