Abdomen Flashcards
Right upper quadrant (RUQ)
Holds the liver, gallbladder, and part of the colon.
The most injured organ in this area is the liver.
Left upper quadrant (LUQ)
Holds the stomach, spleen, and part of the colon.
Injuries here usually affect the spleen.
Right lower quadrant (RLQ)
Holds two parts of the large intestine: the cecum and ascending colon. The appendix is attached to the lower cecum.
Left lower quadrant (LLQ)
Holds the descending and sigmoid portions of the colon
Small intestine
Is central and covers all quadrants
Pancreas
Lies on the posterior wall of both upper quadrants
Large intestine
Starts in RLQ and ends in LLQ after passing through all 4 quadrants
Urinary bladder
Overlaps the pelvis and lower two quadrants
Kidneys and pancreas
Lie behind the abdominal cavity on the level of the umbilicus. This makes them retroperitoneal.
