- Occurs with disorders of the throat or esophagus, such as thrush, neurologic changes (e.g. stroke), or obstructions (e.g. solid mass or tumor)

Order of examination for abdomen
A
- Inspection
- Auscultation
- Percussion- stimulates bowel sounds
- Palpation

Scaphoid
A
- Abdomen contour
- Abdomen caves in. Very skinny

Protuberant
A
- Abdomen contour
- Indicates abdominal distention
- Looks like you are wearing an inner tube.

Inspect the abdomen
A
- Contour- could indicate a mass
- Symmetry- should be symmetrical.
- Umbilicus- Normally midline and inverted.
- Skin- Surface is smooth and even. If patient has scars- note length, location.
- Pulsations- Normally can see aorta pulsating in thin people.
- Demeanor- Should be relaxed.

Bowel sounds
A
- Listen to all 4 quadrants
- Normal sounds are high pitched, gurgling, cascading sounds, occurring irregularly.
- 5-30 gurgles per minute.
- Use diaphragm with light pressure. Start in the RLQ.
