Q

What were Base Hospitals?

A

There were 2 types of base hospitals: stationary and general.
General base hospitals provided long term care for wounded soldiers and stationary hospitals provided treated soldiers who needed more extensive surgery.
However, as the war progressed casualty clearing stations became more important in dealing with wounds. This is because they were closer than base hospitals so the wounds would not get infected. In march 1918, the Germans launched the spring offensive. This meant many CCSs had to be moved back and Base Hospitals became more important for surgery again.
