The Father of Black History, Organizer of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASALAH)
What was the overarching thesis of the mis-education of the negro?
The overarching thesis was that Black people were culturally indoctrinated rather than taught in American schools (taught to hate themselves and consider them as inferior)
What was Woodson’s thoughts on the role of education & the types of education that Blacks received?
Woodson thought that they didn’t receive any profitable skills to support themselves (they were taught older methods of white people skills)
What was Woodson’s beliefs about the “educated negro” vs “non-educated negro”?
“educated negro”: had the belief that they were closer to being a white person since they were educated
“non-educated negro”: had better skills with handling the market compared to the “educated negro”
Thoughts on the Black Church, teachers, and businesses?
Church: there should be a new and united interpretation of Christ
Teachers: he believed that white teachers were important for black history? (he wanted them to focus more on the problem than the outcome; ex: teaching them their culture than considering them higher than the uneducated)
Businesses: uneducated negro were better with business, the “highly educated”

Similar to slaves, had to use work as a way to pay off a debt
What is tight packing?
Tight packing was a term used for the way they would load slaves onto the ship. It wasn’t even guaranteed that all the slaves would make it to the destination.

majority were taken as far as the Carribbeans and Mexico
Who was Harriet Tubman?
Harriet Tubman was a major help to the Underground Railroad. She guided many slaves to freedom and was never captured.

South as far as Mexico, North was as far as Canada
What are the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments?
13th: abolished slavery
14th: grants citizenship to former slaves
15th: prohibits states from denying the rights to vote because of race

Bacon’s Rebellion in Virginia was the first popular uprising in the American colonies. It was long viewed as an early revolt against English tyranny, which culminated in the war for independence one hundred years later. it also was what first initiated segregation.
