What is a “house” in Port?
Quinta
Two styles of port
Ruby and Tawny
Five types of ruby port and brief description.
Ruby - inexpensive/cheap
Ruby Reserve - more complex
Vintage Port - most expensive, must be delcared vintage by IVDP. Should age for decades
Single Quinta vintage port - one estate harvest, often when a house cant confidentally declare a vintage. Improves with age.
Late bottle Vingage Port - Better quality, ages for 4-6 years, likely wont improve with age
Four types of tawny port and brief description.
tawny port - fairly simple and basic
Reserve Tawny - ages for at least 7 years, doesnt improve with bottle age
Tawny 10/20/30/40 - not actual age, but approximate based on how it tastes at time of bottling. A bit oxidized.
Colheita Tawny - vintaged date port minimum of 7 years in cask. Common to be bottled upon order, thus each bottle can vary.
