- Identify the main point/argument.
- What is the writer attempting to persuade you to believe?
- Start with a topic sentence that sums this up.
How- explanation
- HOW is the writer saying it?
- identify persuasive language and devices employed by the author
· How do they support/sell the arguments put forward and the contention?
· How do they position/persuade/manipulate the reader to agree?
DO NOT JUST LIST TECHNIQUES! Explain their intended effect.
Why- explanation
- WHY is it persuasive?
- Why are the arguments and the techniques used to support them persuasive?
· Show how the language used persuades the reader.
