Chain of command
- Pilot-in-command
- Check pilot or training pilot (assigned to operate the flight)
- Captain acting as a co-pilot
- First Officer
- Cabin Manager (CM)
- Cabin crew.
What should you do in the event that Ground Servicing Equipment (GSE) is not present and the door is open?
- Do not attempt to close the door or fit the safety strap.
- Notify the Cabin Manager who will alert ground crew or advise the
captain to radio for assistance to position GSE or close the door. - Advise other crew members and any other staff on the aircraft.
- A crew member shall block the aisle to monitor the affected door/galley area and prevent access to the open door.
NOTE:
Consider using the interphone at the opposite crew jump seat or exercise caution when using the interphone near the affected door.
No activities such as aircraft preflight and security checks, catering and/or galley preparation shall occur in any affected galley/door area until GSE is in place or, the door has been returned to the closed position, regardless of any delays incurred.
When should safety Equipments Checks be performed?
Safety equipment checks shall be completed:
• By any cabin crew member joining part of the operating crew
• If the aircraft is left unattended for any period of time.
Safety Equipment Checks do not have to be repeated by an operating crew member that has remained on board the aircraft during the turnaround.
If a crew member changes operating position during the turnaround, they should familiarise themselves with their new jump seat and related safety equipment, there is no requirement to conduct safety equipment checks.
When are Full Checks completed?
• Prior to aircraft’s first flight of the day (i.e. headstart)
• Where an aircraft has not been under constant supervision of a
Virgin Australia staff member (i.e. cabin crew, ground crew, contracted ground handler flight crew or engineer) or an assigned security guard
• If aircraft has come out of maintenance.
When are Abbreviated Security Checks completed?
• On every turnaround
• On a handover, it is the responsibility of oncoming crew members to
conduct security checks. Security checks may be delegated to off-going crew members to complete while conducting turnaround duties. The oncoming crew member shall receive verbal confirmation from the delegated crew member that security checks in their area of responsibility have been completed.
What are CC actions when Finding a suspicious article?
If any item is hidden, suspicious, not typical, unusual or appears to have been tampered with, crew members will conduct a more focused search of the area. Notify CM immediately of the item’s location and make an assessment of the item following the HOTUP process.
Crew duties during Refuelling
• Cabin crew should assume that refuelling will occur every
turnaround, and that refuelling is being conducted when the fasten seat belt sign is ‘OFF’
• Prior to, or on commencement of, boarding, the Cabin Manager (CM) shall ensure that:
- Crew members are advised whether the aircraft is being
refuelled
- The minimum number of crew required during refuelling are present and in correct position
• When refuelling, cabin crew members shall ensure passengers are complying with the refuelling requirements including:
- Seat belts not fastened
- No smoking
- Lavatories may be used; however, crew shall ensure that aisles and exits are not obstructed by passengers queuing
NOTE:
One crew member shall be positioned by at least one door exit of each zone:
• When passengers are present in that refuelling
zone (a refuelling zone is an area with seats for 72 passengers or less and an exit)
• For every 72 passengers on board.
Door Monitoring

Open Door with GSE in Place:
Stand next to open door: • May only move away
from door to complete SOPs/catering checks in the galley adjacent to open door.
Pair of Closed Doors:
Stand within the area between pair of closed doors:
• May only move away
from pair of doors to complete SOPs/catering checks.
NOTE: Only one crew member is
required to monitor a pair of doors.
Door Manning
Specific doors shall be manned during refuelling to ensure cabin crew members are immediately available to open a door if required in an emergency.
• Position directly next to the door
• Remain until refuelling is complete.
NOTE: Manning doors takes priority over any other tasks, crew members who are responsible for manning a door shall not be delegated service duties while the aircraft is refuelling.
Cabin Crew Boarding Positions During and After Refuelling
BOARDING

Refuelling - 1L or 1R man 1L door.
Refuelling complete - 1L or 1R monitor 1L and 1R door
On completion of service duties to business cabin 1L shall man or monitor 1L door and 1R shall assist in Economy cabin.

NOTE: If 2R is required to collect unaccompanied minors, 1R shall position at overwing and remain until refuelling is complete or 2R returns to overwing area.
