a293 Flashcards
what is division of labour
organising production into a number of specialised simple tasks
give 3 advantages of division of labour
- repetition of the task makes the worker efficient and better at their job
- workers become quicker at job
- production becomes cheaper
give 3 disadvantages of division of labour
- workers may become bored and may lose motivation
- greater costs of training workers
- quality may suffer is worker gets bored or does repetitive tasks
what is productivity
the quantity or products a business can produce in a given amount of time using its existing resources
what is efficiency
a measurement of how effective a business is at producing a good in term of time, quality and waste
what is mechanisation
when machinery is used but labour is still required to work the machines e.g. combine harvester
what is CAD
computer aided design- using a computer to design products
what is CAM
computer aided manufacture- when the machines are used to make a product and are controlled by a computer
what is CIM
computer integrated manufacture - when every aspect of production including finance and stock control is controlled by a computer
give 3 advantages of technology in production
- large amounts can be made- leading to economies of large scale production and economies of scale
- machines are quicker and make less mistakes which improves quality of products
- dangerous tasks can be done
give 3 disadvantages of technology in production
- buying and installing machines are expensive
- may lead to redundancy for some workers
- business may need to recruit skilled workers to work with the the machines safely
effects of technology on efficiency (2)
- less likely to make mistakes and less waste of raw materials
- produces more
effects of technology on productivity (3)
-they produce more as they work faster
effects of technology on quality (2)
- better quality and better standard
- more consistent
effects of technology on workers (bad-2)
- could lose jobs
- it can affect their morale and may make them less motivated if replaced by machinery
