A2 Sustainability and Future Development Flashcards
What effect has humans had on the environment?
Water shortages/ pollution, soil exhaustion, loss of forests, air pollution and degradation of coastlines
What’s the rate of increasing population?
Current population is around 7 billion but will increase to 9.2 billion by 2050
Who contribute to most of the worlds increasing population?
South America and Asia
Having 30% or more of their population under 24 y/o
What will happen to the fuel supply?
Fuel supply will decrease while demand will increase
What will happen to the water supply ?
Supply will decrease while demand increases
What while happen to food production?
Food production will increase
What will happen to shelter ?
We will run out of shelter due to increasing population
Ehrlich’s equation for overall environmental impact
I = P x A x T
I : total environmental Impact
P: Population
A: Affluence
T: Technology
Elaboration on IPAT
Population =
how many people are consuming resources and creating waste
Affluence=
The average amount of goods and services we each use
Technology=
How effectively we produce goods and services
What does the technology life cycle element involve?
1) the resources needed to make the goods in the first place i.e. Metals, plastics
2) the resources needed to use the product i.e. How much fuel is needed to run the car.
3) the resources implicated at the end of the products service life i.e. How much resources are needed to recycle the cars components
What is an Ecological Footprint?
Compares human demands on nature with the biosphere ability to regenerate and provide services
Measured in hectares (100m x 100m)
What areas effect your ecological footprint?
Diet Clothing Furnishing Packaging Size of home / how you're running it Travel
What can nations do if they can calculate their ecological footprint?
- Assess the value of their countries ecological assets
- Monitor and manage their risks
- Identify the risks associated with ecological deficits
- Set policies informed by ecological reality
- Measure progress toward their goal
What is a carbon footprint?
Consists of the net greenhouse gases emitted by an entity individual, organization or nation
What’s OPL’s aims?
Zero carbon Zero waste Sustainable transport Local / sustainable materials Local / sustainable food Sustainable water Natural habitats / wildlife Culture / heritage Equity / fair trade Health / happiness
