A2 - Entropy Flashcards
What is Entropy?
It is the quantitative measure of the level of disorder in a system.
What is the symbol that represents Entropy?
S
What is entropy a measure of?
It is a measure of the number of ways that particles can be arranged and the number of ways that the energy can be shared out between the particles
When are particles more energetically stable?
They are more energetically stable when there is more disorder.
So particles move to try and increase the enthalpy
What is the overall pattern between entropy and temperature?
As temperature increases, so does entropy
What is the relationship between the entropy of a pure substance and temperature?
Entropy of a pure substance increases with temperature
Why does the enthalpy increase within a solid as temperature increases?
This is because the particles gain energy and vibrate more
What is the trend in disorder when a solid melts to form a liquid?
There is a large increase in disorder
What is the role of temperature during the transformation of a solid into a liquid?
The temperature is the melting point
What is the trend in entropy as temperature increases within a liquid?
Within a liquid there is an increase in entropy
What happens to the entropy at the boiling point when a liquid changes into a gas and why?
There is a very large increase in entropy at the boiling point when a liquid changes into a gas as gases are very disordered
What is the trend in entropy between a solid, liquid and a gas?
Increases from solid to gas
