If you wish to fly in R157, R158 or R159 restricted zones how can you obtain permission?
You need an enhanced NSF (Non Standard Flight) application on NATS website with 28 days notice
If an area has a number prefixed with D what does this signify?
A Danger zone
Can you fly in a danger zone?
With permission you can have freedom to operate. Certain zones like Military firing ranges may only be in use during certain times.

Section 265F
What is Article 241 of the Air Navigation Order?
You must not recklessly or negligently cause or permit an aircraft to endanger any person or property
Who is the operator of a drone?
The boss, the person who is responsible for the competence of remote pilots and ensures all staff and pilots are properly briefed. May also be the pilot.
What should the operator be familiar with and responsible for?
The operating procedures, ensuring the the manufacturers instructions are known and followed and ensuring the UAS is suitable for the task.
What should the remote pilot be familiar with and responsible for?
They are responsible for Safety, they must be competent and fully familiar with the operating procedures.
What is CAP 722?
CAP 722 is the primary guidance document for the operation of unmanned aircraft systems within the UK. It is intended to assist those who are involved in all aspects of the development and operation of UAS
What does UAS stand for?
Unmanned Aerial System
What are the three sets of CAA regulation categories for UAS in the UK?
Open - Low risk to 3rd parties
Specific - Greater risk or something falling outside of Open
Certified - Equivalent risk as manned aircraft
What are the three CAA regulatory subcategories of the Open category?
A1 - Flying ‘over’ people
A2 - Flying ‘close to’ people
A3 - Flying ‘far from’ people
Up to what weight can UAVs be in the A1 category?
up to 250g
Can a drone in A1 category be flown over a group of people?
Assemblies of people must be evaluated qualitatively based on the ability of people to escape from any risk of UAS operation
What are the requirements to fly a drone in the A2 category during the transitional period?
Maximum 2KG, at least 50m from uninvolved people. Not over the top of uninvolved people at any height. Remote pilot must have passed A2 Certificate of Competency
What are the requirements to fly a drone in the A2 category after the transitional period?
Drone must be C2 certified weigh less than 4KG, at least 30m from uninvolved people, or 5m if in “low speed” mode. Not over top of uninvolved people at any height.
What is the closest you can fly to uninvolved people in the A3 category?
150M horizontally
What do you need to fly in the Certified Category?
Must have a GVC (General Visual Line of sight Certificate) and hold an Operations Authorisation with Operations Manual
What do you need in order to fly with First Person View?
You need a UA Observer to assist with looking out and to provide clear instruction for avoidance
What is the minimum distance you can fly from vehicles, vessels or structures?
There is no specific minimum distance, but you should be aware of nuisance, safety and privacy laws and regulations.
If you intend to fly closer than recommended distances with involved persons what should you ensure?
Obtain permission, give instruction. Written is best.
What steps should be taken when night flying?
Perform a daylight Recce. Ensure any obstacles are sufficiently illuminated. Ensure take off and landing areas are well lit. Maintain VLOS.
What is the 1:1 rule?
For every meter high your drone is, maintain a meter further distance from an uninvolved person.
Do you require permission to fly over private land?
Trespassing rules do not apply to airspace, permission is not required. There may be privacy issues and laws relating to photography, it is recommended always to obtain permission if possible.
What should you do in the event of an aircraft near-miss?
Fill in an Airprox report using ECCAIRS2
What are the effects of hot air and high altitude?
Little air for rotors to bite into, controls sluggish, motors speed up. Battery endurance is reduced.
What are the effects of cold air?
Reduced battery endurance, possible icing.
What are the possible effects of wind?
High wind speed can cause loss of directional control. Vertical extent affects wind speed.
What are the expected conditions following a warm weather front?
A slow moving extended band of rain, low cloud and drizzle.
What are the expected conditions following a cold weather front?
Quick moving, narrow band of heavy rain. High wind. Fly before or after a cold front.
What are the expected conditions following an occluded weather front?
Really poor weather, do not fly.
What is an occluded weather front?
Where a warm front meets a cold front.
What kind of clouds indicate a thunderstorm?
Cumulonimbus anvil shaped cloud
What is the most common radio spectrum used with a UAS?
2.4Ghz spread spectrum
What is the Maximum Take Off Weight?
The maximum weight a drone can carry, refer to the manufacturers instructions.
