A2 - Characteristics of tissue Flashcards
Heart
Location: Between the lungs in the chest
Structure: Cardiac muscle and epithelial linings
Function: Pumps blood to the lugs and round the body
Lungs
Location: One on either side of the heart
Structure: Simple epithelial and elastic fibres allowing expansion and contraction
Function: Inhalation and exhalation of gases linked to respiration
Brain
Location: Inside the skull, in the head
Structure: Nervous tissue consisting of neurons and neuroglia
Function: Receives and sends nervous impulses as a means of communication
Stomach
Location: In abdomen, on left side beneath the diaphragm
Structure: Non-striated muscle in three layers, epithelium, gastric glands
Function: Churns and mixes food into a paste, begins digestion
Liver
Location: In the abdomen, on the right side beneath the diaphragm
Structure: Cuboid epithelial cells in lobules
Function: Large number of functions such as secretes bile and salts, stores glycogen, etc.
Pancreas
Location: Lies between the stomach and duodenum on left side of abdomen
Structure: Glandular epithelium
Function: Secretes digestive juice down ducts to small intestine, also secretes insulin and glucagon
Duodenum
Location: C-shaped part of the small intestine lying beyond the stomach
Structure: Two coats of non-striated muscle, lined by columnar epithelium
Function: Passes undigested chyme to colon. Absorbs nutrients into bloodstream
Colon
Location: Joins to ileum in right-hand side of the abdomen, runs up the liver in front of the stomach and down the left side to join with the rectum
Structure: Two coats of non-striated muscle, but outecoat not complete
Function: Absorbs water, producing semi-solid faeces
Kidneys
Location: One on each side of the back wall of the abdomen below diaphragm. Left kidney is higher than the right, due to position of the liver.
Structure: Composed of nephrons
Function: Eliminate waste products and water maintaining homeostasis
Bladder
Location: Lies centrally in front of lower pelvis
Structure: Non-striated muscle lined by epithelium
Function: Collects and stores urine until appropriate time or release
Ovaries
Location: One on each side of the pelvis below the kidneys
Structure: Connective tissues and blood vessels, epithelial cells that form follicles
Function: Produce ova or eggs, secrete hormones
Testes
Location:
Structure:
Function:
Uterus
Location:
Structure:
Function:
Skin
Location: Covers whole body
Structure: Keratinised, compound epithelium above dermis of areolar tissue
Function: Water - and bacteria-proof covering, assists body temperature regulation and homeostasis
