A2 1 Eye Definitions Flashcards
Conjunctiva
Protects cornea from damage - thin transparent membrane
Sclera
Site of attachment of eye muscles, protects against damage
Cornea
Most refraction takes place here
Aqueous humourous
Maintains shape of the front of the eye
Iris
Adjusts the size of the pupil to control the amount of light entering the eye
Pupil
Area where light reaches the lens
Ciliary body
Adjusts shape of lens to focus on rays
Suspensary ligaments
Transfer tension in wall of eyeball to make lens thinner
Vitreous Humour
Maintains shape of rear part of eye and supports the lens
Retina
Rods and cones initiate impulses in associated neurones when stimulated
Fovea
Part of the eye that provides clearest colour vision
Choroid
Prevents refraction of light back through the eye
Optic nerve
Transmits impulses from retina to the brain
Blind spot
Contains no light sensitive cells so is not sensitive to light
