A2 1 Flashcards
Amino acid
Have the general formula RCH(NH2)COOH
Zwitterion
The dipolar ionic form of an amino acid, formed when a proton is transferred from the acid group, to the basic amine group
Isoelectric point
PH value at which an amino acid exists as a swifter ion
Stereoisomers
Same molecular and structural formula, but have the atoms arranged differently in space
Chiral carbon
Carbon atom with four different atoms or groups attached
Addition polymerisation
When many small molecules join together to form a large molecule, with the breaking of a pi bond
Condensation polymerisation
When two monomers join together to form a larger molecule, with the elimination of a small molecule eg.HCl or H2O
Biodegradable
Breaks down completely into CO2 and H2O
Degradable
Breaks down into smaller fragments, when exposed to heat or light
Photodegradable
Becomes weak and brittle when exposed to sunlight for long periods of time
Adsorption
A solid stationary phase holds molecules of gas, liquid or solute as a thin film on its surface
Relative solubility
Movement of molecules between two different liquids due to a differing solubility between the molecules
Retention time
The time, from the injection of the sample, for the component to lesbe the column
Primary Amine
Has the general formula r-NH2
