A1.1.2 STRUCTURE/POLARITY OF H2O MOLECULES Flashcards
1
Q
State the molecular structure of H2O molecules
A
- Polar molecules (Dipole)
- Contains polar covalent bonds between O & H2
- A dipole as a result of the diff. in electroneg. & polar covalent bonds
– visuals in notes –
2
Q
More details abt the molecular structure of H2O molecules
A
- Unequal distribution of charges
3
Q
Properties of H2O molecules
A
- Has weak attractions with other polar molecules
- Can form H-bonds with F, N & O
→ Bc of the huge electroneg. diff.
– visuals in notes –
4
Q
What is electroneg.?
A
- the tendency of an atom to attract electrons
→ influenced by the # of protons in the nucleus
→ influenced y # of orbital levels (↑ orbital levels = ↓ electroneg. – shielding effect)
5
Q
Properties of H2O
A
- Thermal Properties:
→ ↑ SHC (requires breaking of H-bonds) - Cohesive/Adhesive Properties:
→ Stick to H2O molecules (Cohes.)
→ Stick to other polar molecules (Adhes.) - Solvent:
→ Dissolves polar & ionic substances
→ Forms competing polar associations to draw materials apart
→ H-bonds r generally stronger than other polar associations
