A1 - Types of Computer Systems Flashcards
What is a component?
A small, identifiable part which is linked to something bigger
e.g. - Hard Disc, Speaker, Memory
Name some components inside a computer system
- Video camera
- Microphone
- Software
- Speaker
- Hard Disc
- Memory
- Processor
- Scanner
- Printer
What is an example of a portable computer system - describe it
Mobile devices (like an iPhone) are portable and easily carried in a pocket or bag, mostly suited to deal with small amounts of data.
What is an example of a personal computer system - describe it
PCs are larger, general purpose computers with only a small number of users.
Briefly describe a server
Servers are large computers that interact with many computers and users.
Describe a multi-functional device (MFD)
Multi-functional devices are those that serve more than one purpose. These are commonly combined printers and scanners, which may also include other functions such as the capability to fax/copy.
Describe an expansion card (SSD)
A printed circuit board with standard connections to plug into the expansion slot and expand the use of the system.
Describe a motherboard
A printed circuit board that connects CPU to inputs, outputs and storage. Usually has ROM pre-mounted.
Describe a Port
Connected to peripherals (keyboard, mouse, USB, sound, graphics) and networks.
Describe ROM
(1st ROM) - Contains boot code permanently
(2nd ROM) - Contains basic input/output handling code (BIOS)
Describe RAM
Stores software when power on. Can add extra modules to increase memory
Describe the CPU
The central processing unit (CPU) controls the whole system
Describe the fan
Computers (and CPU) can get very hot. Fans and heat sinks cool them down.
Describe the power supply
Converts the AC from mains to low power DC and then provides power to motherboard, discs, fans, CPU, cards and etc.
Describe an expansion card slot
Enables expansion of system with extra circuits for items such as better sound, video, network or specialised use.
