Q

A1.4 - Discuss how periodization should be organized to optimize performance and avoid overtraining and injury.

A

Microcycle:
Weekly training programme
Includes all training and recovery sessions that week
Designed specifically to meet the overall goals of that phase

Mesocycle
Specific block of training designed to achieve a specific goal (often related to a component of fitness)
Made up of microcycles
Length of the mesocycle would depend on the goal.

Macrocycle:
Year or season long programme
The overall goal

In general; periodization is split into 3 phases.

Preparation (pre-season)
Competition
Transition (post-season)
