what are the principles of development?

what are gross motor skills?
coordinate larger muscles in order to perform actions
- develops first
- muscle tone and balance
- control over posture
what are fine motor skills?
using hand-eye coordination to use small muscles
- develops later
- gets more precise
- requires more practice
pincer grasp
refers to using the forefinger and thumb
- self feeding, buttons, zips
palmer grasp
involuntary reflex in infants. when an object is placed in an infants palm, the fingers grasp the object out of reflex
tripod grasp
when the thumb, index finger and middle finger work together to pick up small objects
what is puberty?
a period of rapid change and growth in which young people reach sexual maturity and become biologically able to reproduce. secondary sexual characteristics develop
what are primary sexual characteristics?
relate to the changes and development of reproductive organs present at birth
what are secondary sexual characteristics?
are outward signs of development from a child into a man or woman
what hormonal changes occur during pregnancy?
progesterone is produced in early pregnancy to support baby until placenta takes over.
relaxin loosens joints, ligaments and muscles to make room for the growing baby
physical effects of perimenopause
hot flashes, breast soreness, vaginal dryness, slowed metabolism (weight gain), sleep problems, decrease in fertility
menopause
gradual ending of menstruation
