A1 Modern Technologies Flashcards
Ad hoc network
A wireless network which does not rely on an infrastructure which usually needs to be in place for standard network
Open network
An open network is one which allows users to access it with their device.
Tethering
When one device e.g. a laptop is linked to a second device e.g. a smartphone
Personal hotspot
When a smartphone’s connectivity is used to access the internet from a different device
What are the security issues with open networks
Anybody can access a network, leaving it open to hackers to access data Data is not encrypted, therefore there is a large risk for others to intercept it Passwords may be compromised
Encryption
Converting data into a code so that it cannot be read if intercepted as it is sent across the internet.
Issues affecting network availability
Rural vs city locations Developed vs developing countries Available infrastructure Mobile network coverage Blackspots
Cloud storage
Remote storage which is managed and backed up by the company that is providing the storage
Features of cloud storage
It is accessed via the internet Files are stored on remote servers which are accessed via the internet Enables files to be accessed from a range of devices from any location which has the internet Available 24/7 Can synchronise between the device and the cloud to ensure that there is always a back up Scalability – can buy or rent the amount of storage needed, with the ability to increase or decrease as needs change
Advantages of cloud storage
Enables the user to access files from multiple locations The company storing the files is responsible for the backing up of the files Can be used as a back up facility Additional storage can be purchased when required without the need for the purchase of additional hardware Allows collaborative working
Disadvantages of cloud storage
Can only access the data when there is an internet connection Accessing large amounts of data may be slow if the connection is not strong Reliant on a third party to ensure data is safe Need to ensure that the storage provider is storing data in a country covered by GDPR or that country has an agreement with the EU Increased risk of hacking
Features of cloud computing
The processing happens on a remote server via an internet connection Applications can be accessed from any location with an internet connection from a range of devices Users always got access to the latest version of the application as there is no need to manage it There is no need for technical expertise to manage the system, other than the internet connection Some online applications are set up to allow multiple user to edit them e.g. Google documents
Cloud Computing
Web-based applications – software that runs inside a web browser rather than on a device
Why cloud computing
Remote access – allows you to connect to your workplace from another device e.g. you can access software on your PC from a remote tablet Allows people to work from a variety of locations and still access specialist software Available 24/7
