What change did the Waner Brothers want for their 1951 film?
They wanted to cut the rape scene, they thought it ruined the play and was in poor taste.
However, Williams’ won the case, but the end of the play was changed so that Stanley was punished for his actions.
How did the audiences in 1947 and the 1951 Kazan film react to the rape?
They sympathised with Stanley: He was a white working class man and it was understandable that he would want to assert his control over Blanche. Also because he was played by Marlon Brando, making the violence and impetuosity seem sexy and yet vulnerable.
How have the attitudes towards the film changed in the last 60 years?
Rape is intolerable and criminal, the performance doesn’t have its original impact.

- 1848 French novel adapted into a 1936 film.
- The eponymous dame lives a lower class life and seeks a lover to free her from it.
- She seeks out Armand, a rich man who saves her.
- Armand’s father breaks up the relationship and ultimately the Dame dies alone.
