A02 science Flashcards
What are the 2 sections
Can psychology claim to be a science
Are the goals of science appropriate for psychology
What are the 3 sections for can psychology claim to be a science
Scientific research is desirable
Psychology uses the scientific method
Lack of objectivity and control
Talk about scientific research is desirable
People aren’t willing to accept claims without proof
So scientific reserved is desirable
Talk about psychplogy uses the scientific method
Most psychologists generate models that can be falsified and experiments to test the models
But others claim psychologists try to dress up. They may use quantified measurements and statistical analysis but this doesn’t make it scientific, they’re pseudoscience
Talk about lack of objectivity and control
We can’t measure human behaviour as objectively as the measurement of physical objects
In psychology the objects of research may react to the researcher which leads to experimenter bias and demand characteristics which compromises validity
What are the 3 sections for are the goals of science appropriate for psychology
No mother vs idiographic
Scientific methods haven’t worked
Qualitative research
Talk about nomo the tic vs idiographic
Some psychologists don’t see the study of behavioir as a scientific approach
Each patient should be treated as an individual
Science rakes the nomo the tic approach, looking to make generalisations about people and find similarities
So they’re not appropriate
Talk about scientific methods haven’t worked
Psychological app raíces to treating mental illness hace had at best modest success, so not very good, which suggests that the goals of science are not always appropriate
Talk about qualitative research
Some scientists advocate more subjective qualitative methods of conducting research but these methods are still scientific
E.g. interviews
Qualitative content analysis
Observation etc.
How is the scientific approach reductions ist
Reduces complex phenomena to simple one
So is it really appropriate
It tells us little about the Real behaviours, but without it it’s difficult to oink out any patients or reach conclusions
How is scientific method determinist
Searches for causal rels
Which os good to understand behaviours but also oversimplified the rel between causes and effects
