A01 Retrieval Practice (General Qs) Flashcards
Why should bile not be referred to as an enzyme?
It brings about a physical change in size of the fat molecule not a chemical change to the fat.
State three ways mRNA differs from DNA.
RNA is single stranded whereas DNA is double stranded
RNA is shorter than DNA
RNA has uracil DNA has thymine base
Put these stages of mitosis in the correct order: metaphase telophase prophase and anaphase
prophase
metaphase
anaphase
telophase
What is the difference between surface area and volume?
Volume increases to the power cubed and surface area increases to the power squared.
Name one chemical element found in proteins that are not found in polysaccharides.
Nitrogen
What is the difference between a competitive and non-competitive inhibitor?
Competitive- the active site is used
by a different molecule so rate of reaction eventually reaches a maximum.
Non-competitive the shape of the enzyme is changed so ratio of reaction never reaches a maximum.
How is tissue fluid formed?
Blood pressure forces water out of the capillary; the pressure is hydrostatic; capillary walls are permeable to water.
What is the effect of shifting the oxygen dissociation curve of Hb to the left?
Haemoglobin acquires a greater affinity for oxygen.
How many molecules are produced when a triglyceride molecule is completely hydrolysed?
4- a glycerol and three fatty acids
Why should AIDS not be called a disease?
It is a condition where the immune system is weakened making a person less able to fight disease.
Name two types of channel protein.
Gated e.g. voltage gated and pore e.g. aquaporins are water channels
Describe a test for reducing sugars.
Benedict’s test- heat with Benedict’s solution. It will go from blue to orange- brick red as a positive result.
