Abeyance
Temporary inactivity, cessation, or suspension, to withhold action
Absentee Voting
Voting by mail or proxy for a member who is absent
Absolute Majority
A majority vote of all members present
Abstain
To publicly refrain from voting usually because of a conflict of interest
Absurd Motion
A dilatory or frivolous motion used to delay action
Accept
To approve or adopt a statement, report, or motion
Acclamation
Enthusiastic approval by a voice vote
Accredit
To certify as genuine, to authorize or sanction
Addressing the chair
Using the correct title when seeking recognition from the person who is presiding (i.e. Mr or Madam Chairman or President)
Ad Hoc Committee
(Ad Hoc is a Latin term meaning “for this case alone” (see SPECIAL COMMITTEE)
Adhere
To be attached to or dependent on. (ex: A pending motion that is adhered to the motion to which it is applied)
Adjourn
A privileged motion to officially close a meeting and it requires a second and a majority vote to adopt it. If a time is not set, it is an unqualified and debate is not allowed
Adjourned Meeting
A meeting which is a continuation of a preceding meeting
Adjourn Sine Die
( sine die= without day) meetings may adjourn “sine die” meaning there is no date set for a future meeting
Adopt
To pass, accept, or agree to by a vote
