A Tour of the Cell Flashcards
Light microscope (LM)
An optics instrument wit lenses that refract (bend) visible light to magnify images of specimens.
Organelles
Any of several membrane-enclosed structures with specialized functions, suspended in the cytosal of eukaryotic cells.
Electron microscope (EM)
A microscope that uses magnets to focus an electron on r through a specimen resulting in a 100-fold greater resolution.
Scanning electron Microscope (SEM)
used to study the fine details of cell surfaces.
Transmission electron micrograph (TEM)
used to study the internal structure of thin sections of cells.
Cell fractionation
The disruption of a cell and separation of its parts by centrifugation at successively higher speeds.
Cytosol
The semifluid portion of the cytoplasm.
Nucleoid
A non-membrane -enclosed region in a prokaryotic cell where its chromosome is located.
