A Structure Flashcards
“The dwarf with has hands on backwards sat”
Enjambment emphasises the word “sat”, by placing it at the beginning of the second line. This monosyllabic introduction draws attention to the fact that the beggar has to sit on the ground outside.
This makes the beggar seem like a character that ought to be pitied, rather than ignored
“The cleverness”
• Enjambment highlights/emphasises the idea of the priest’s opinion of Giotto’s ‘cleverness’ on a line of its own.
• Contributes to ironic tone and suggests that the ‘cleverness’ is perhaps a negative thing, in this context, as the teachings of God/Jesus clearly have not been communicated to this crowd of tourists
“whose eyes … voice as sweet as a child’s when she speaks to her mother or a bird’s when it spoke to St Francis”
Despite this list all the horrific deformities of the dwarf, he has inner beauty which is unexpected and creates an anti-climax.
This emphasises the unfair judgement of the beggar by the priest and the tourists
